Hapi Drums is a set of four steel tongue drums crafted by legendary instrument makers Grahm Doe & Tricia Kelly at their workshop in the Sierra Mountain foothills of Oakhurst, CA. Steel tongue instruments are known for a smooth fundemantal tone wrapped in a haze of complex harmonics and a long, mellow sustain. Hapi Drum is one of the oldest and highest quality steel tongue drum makers in the world, with unique body designs and tuning options and clear, rich notes that cut cleanly through clusters of carefully-balanced lush, swirling overtones.
Soundiron recorded four instruments, capturing each of them with a wide stereo pair of large-diaphragm Neumann TLM 103s and a binaural Rode NT-SF1, to provide you with two distinct tonal options. Instruments included the low "Origin" D minor model (D3 - A4), a pair of "Slim Tuneable" mid models (A3 - E5) and the small, treble Tini (A4 to A5). Each model can be loaded separately - including individual tongue soloing - or you can play all of them together as a combined chromatic scale. Soundiron played each one with soft rubber mallets, hard metal picks, and nylon jazz brushes. With our intuitive multi-layered modular UI, you'll enjoy complete freedom to mix, layer, retune and customize each sound to your heart's content.
About the Creators
Hapi Drum is owned and operated by partners Grahm Doe & Tricia Kelly. They also own and operate The Didgeridoo Store since 1997, with over 19 years of combined experience in the musical instrument marketplace. Their mission is to enhance peoples' lives through music and culture. The passion for steel instruments began with the purchase of their first Hang. The beautiful sound of steel was captivating. With their previous experience of creating musical instruments (didgeridoos), they began experimenting with steel. They discovered Dennis Havlena and his research on using steel tongues to create a similar kind of sound. Inspired by his proof of concept they set out on a prototyping journey. They began to experiment with tongue shapes, drum body sizes, sound ports, dampening materials, and different steel types. After months of work they had their first design, the HAPI Origin. They are always excited to improve and evolve Soundiron's product line!
Grahm and Tricia both love nature and going for hikes in and around Yosemite National Park. They are deeply attracted to instruments that can be enjoyed in the outdoors and around a campfire with family and friends. In their spare time, Grahm is an avid rock climber and Trish plays with glass (stained, fused, torch). Both these creative outlets have taught them great attention to detail, which they use daily in running their business.
