Pros
- The Orbit Motion feature is one of the most creative motion engines I’ve yet come across – beyond the 40+ Orbit Motion presets, Cube allows you to build your own complex motions throughout its three-dimensional sound space
- Lots of nicely categorized presets means you can find a sound quickly
- Easy-to-use sound design engine allows you to create deep, rich pads, plucks, pulses, and more
- Up to 8 layers of samples can be combined to create completely new sounds
- Easy-to-use and intuitive modulation matrix allows you to manipulate sounds via LFOs, FX, and more
- Dedicated sequencer for each of the 8 sample layers
- Simple drag and drop sample import allows you to use your own sounds in combination with the factory samples
- Randomize sounds, orbits, and fx separately
- Multiple free preset packs for Cube available from Lunacy Audio
- So much fun to play and to create with
Cons
- FX are only assignable via global controls rather than via each sound layer
Cube sounds fantastic and comes housed in a creative and powerful sound design engine. The 3D “Orbit” sound design feature of Cube is one of the most ingenious motion features I have come across in a virtual instrument. With so many creative, great-sounding presets and tons of sound design potential, Cube is an innovative instrument that makes building sounds as fun as playing them.
Cube is a powerful virtual instrument that is also a ton of fun to play. With the creative Orbit Motion engine and lots of customization options, Cube is a virtual instrument that combines stellar sound design with ease of use in one of the coolest engines I’ve seen in a long time. With lots of great presets and layering options galore, Cube is one of my favourite instruments for 2021.
To say that Cube is a creative virtual instrument would be a gross understatement. Cube is not only creative but also a blast to play! Cube is Lunacy Audio’s giant splash into the world of sample libraries and virtual instruments. While most developers would cautiously launch their initial virtual instrument into the world under the care of a known sampler or sample engine, true to their name, Lunacy Audio went all out and built their first virtual instrument from the ground up!
When opening Cube, the first thing you’ll notice is the large three-dimensional cube with a small wobbling ball. This sub-atomic-looking structure is known as the Orbit Motion engine, and it’s one of the most creative XY motion engines I’ve yet encountered. Rather than simply fading between 2-4 different sound layers as you might have experienced with other sampled instruments containing an XY control, the Orbit Motion engine moves between 8 different points within the onscreen cube (each representing an independent sound layer), producing an insanely fun and infinitely creative sound-shaping device. There is 40+ Orbit Motion pattern presets to get you started, but you can create your own custom complex patterns quickly and easily.
While Cube comes with 500+ presets, creating your own sounds is quick, fun, and easy. Each sound can consist of up to 8 sound layers with independent sequencers/arpeggiators for each. There’s an easy-to-use modulation matrix that allows you to control up to 4 LFOs, 8 FX, and just about everything else, you can find within Cube. Cube is part sample library, part sample-based synthesizer, and all fun. Cube is one of my favourite instruments that I’ve come across in all of 2021!
